Friday
Got off the train in South Bend. Uber-ed to a hotel.
Saturday
Picked up my rental car. Drove to my old home town. Attended the class reunion. Here’s a pic of an old friend, Deb, and me.

Sunday
Next morning… Drove to West Lafayette. There for not quite two days. Loved getting to hang out a bit with my dear mentor, major professor, and friend.

Wednesday
Drove across the state, west to east, to Jay County to find out something/anything about my grandmother. More on that in another post. Found some genealogical records in Portland, at the Portland Historical Society and a government office.

Raced through driving rain to Indianapolis Apple store. Managed to get through the doors before they closed. Whew. Got my MacBook up and running. It had died just before I boarded the train in Tucson.
Found the worst motel in Indy ; lured in with well-disguised, shiny advertising.
Thursday
Drove to Bedford /Salem area south of Bloomington.
Saw a long time friend, and her mom, sister, and a few other friends.
Sunday
Drove to Fort Wayne via Marion
The military cemetery in Marion where my Vietnam Vet brother is buried was CLOSED.

Image of myy brother’s grave I took a few years back.
Drove on and met my great-nephew Justin for a nice dinner in Fort Wayne.
Spent Monday at the Allen County Public Library in the genealogical section.

Tuesday
Drove to Ann Arbor.

Spent a bit of time with a wonderful human being and writing friend, Klara.
Thursday
To South Bend and a lovely couple of days with Mary and Jim. I’ve known Mary for 50 years. We were poets and dreamers, dear friends, camped out, and canned many a bunch of tomatoes together. Also experienced / explored many an Art Institute exhibit together in our twenties.
Sunday
Returned rental car; caught the South Shore to Millennium Station. Hotel near Amtrak station. Stayed in room and ordered in.
Monday
Walked to the Art Institute and entered as they opened. Caillebotte special exhibition.. Going through this time was not like the ever so many old times with Mary or Pat in the 1970s and 80s.
Feet were very tired and sore, and by the time I walked back to the hotel, I felt my age. Should have taken advantage of the fine eating available in Chicago, but I just had a salad and went to bed early. Back on the train the next day.
That’s a lot of driving!
I love how you illustrate the descriptions with your photos! Do you have any idea of total miles? Fun to remember our visit.
I have mileage logged somewhere. I thought I should use the pics I managed to take. I nearly always forget to take pictures in a timely fashion. This trip I managed to snap a few.
