i was six
when they married
memories of that
and more
potato salad and apple pie
summer under the backyard tree
winter crowded in the house
the farmhouse held us all
so long ago
once we were five I wrote
when the first of my brothers died
on the airplane to the funeral
said good-bye to the last
of the five
an orchid
a hospice room
keys, dogs, deer stands, and a 1000 yard stare
even the women they loved are gone
no one now remembers my birth
burned beans on the stove
no one to call on my birthday
teasing and tickles almost torture
generations, factories, farms and wars
Long Swamps and Silver Lakes
no one understands
my references
float freely
in my mind alone
peach pie
German chocolate
chocolate upside down
strawberry shortcake
and many colored cakes
all our favorites
who remembers such simple things
all are gone
but me
alone
